May 16, 2006, San Carlos, AZ – San Carlos Apache Telecommunications Utility, Inc. (SCATUI) is sponsoring an educational trip to Washington, D.C. for two area students, June 3 – June 7, 2006. They will be attending the twelfth annual Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Youth Tour. The youth tour introduces the telecommunications industry to students from rural America within a legislative context. Aside from the educational aspects of this trip, students also had the opportunity to tour many of the historical sites in the nation’s capital.
Kristy Edwards, a junior at Globe High School and Tiffany Hinton, a junior at Ft. Thomas High School, have been selected as SCATUI’s Delegates to the FRS Youth Tour. Kristy is the daughter of Herbert and Sharon Edwards of Peridot. Tiffany is the daughter of Sammie and Evelyn Hinton of Bylas.
The trip will feature a comprehensive overview of the telecommunications industry, including careers in telecom, the critical role telecommunications plays in rural America, and how legislative and regulatory decisions affect the industry.
By providing our youth with telecommunications services comparable to those found in urban areas, as well as exposing them to cultural and educational opportunities, such as the FRS Youth Tour, we hope our youth will remain in and become active members in their rural communities.
This year, the youth tour will bring together over 100 high school students, from throughout rural communities in the United States. Students will arrive in Washington, D.C. for a four-day, educationally- and culturally-enriching experience. The tour allows youth to meet with members of Congress who represent rural constituents. They will also participate in educational sessions about the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and more. Students will visit some of the nation’s most historic sites, including the Vietnam, Korean and World War II memorials, the Supreme Court, the Smithsonian Museums, Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.
FRS hosts the annual youth tour.
FRS promotes, educates and advocates to the public, rural telecommunications issues in order to sustain and enhance the quality of life within communities throughout rural America. The foundation was established by the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association (NTCA), of which SCATUI is a member. |
